Therapist

Matthew Reyes, M.A.

Pre-Licensed Counselor

I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and first completed my Bachelor of Arts in Tampa, Florida at the University of South Florida majoring in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, concentrating on Psychology and Sociology as my fields of study. Then I obtained a dual Master of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in Counseling Psychology from an international school at Webster Vienna Private University in Vienna, Austria, and Webster University in Missouri, qualifying me as a psychologist in Austria. My training abroad has allowed me to practice holistic counseling in diverse settings such as international social hubs, LGBTQIA+ cultural centers, and at the university counseling center. I worked with clientele from different international backgrounds and age groups, where I utilized different therapeutic mediums including individual counseling, group counseling, expressive arts interventions (music, art, dance, poetry), and guided meditations.

My therapeutic approach focuses on client-centered, humanistic philosophies that aim to explore and treat the individual as a whole: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. It is grounded in a stance of empathy, acceptance, and respect for self-discovery and self-determination for all clients. Through techniques taken from Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Gestalt therapy, I help clients become aware of and identify feelings, emotions, conflicts, and behaviors of the here-and-now.

Through open and honest communication, my goal is to create a therapeutic space that is both a collaboration and a healing mechanism for client’s who may be experiencing: depression and low mood, anxiety and fears, stress, substance abuse, or existential and relationship issues. Overall, I believe the therapeutic relationship is the most valuable part in the progress of therapy, and as artists of being, both client and therapist have the potential to transform a space into their own unique canvas.

I am originally from Miami, Florida. I obtained my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from NOVA Southeastern University, where I specialized in long-term mental illness, and got my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Florida State University, where I majored in Psychology. I have had the privilege of treating clientele from diverse backgrounds in both English and Spanish, and have experience working in a variety of settings such as inpatient programs, crisis units, community mental health centers, and outpatient clinics. While my theoretical orientation is eclectic, I lean toward Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Rogerian (or Person-Centered) approaches.

I am proficient in treating several mental health issues, including:

  • depression,

  • anxiety,

  • schizophrenia other related psychotic disorders,

  • bipolar disorder and other related mood disorders,

  • substance abuse including dual-diagnosis,

  • gender dysphoria.

I help clients identify their problematic thinking patterns, develop coping mechanisms, process their trauma, and understand how past experiences affect their current level of functioning.  I value the transformative nature of strong therapeutic relationships, and am proficient in providing therapy for individuals, groups, couples, and families.  My goal is to apply my compassion and expertise to the therapeutic process, while helping my clients improve their lives, ultimately attaining a sense of peace and fulfillment.

In therapy, I am empathetic, nonjudgmental, and personable; I create a safe space in which clients can begin the process of healing. When needed, I know how to gently guide people through the exploration of their vulnerabilities, losses, grief, and trauma. The philosophy behind my therapeutic approach is best captured in Ernest Hemingway’s famous words: “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places.”
